Youtube thumbnails don't necessarily have to be "high art", but the designs need to be eye-catching and relevant to the viewer, if it hopes to stand out.
I would go so far as to say that thumbnails need to be over-the-top and sometimes exaggerated to the point of ridiculous.
Don't underestimate the power of the thumbnail :)
Collages can be made in a paint app to test the thumbnail before publishing. Question is: which thumbnail wants to be clicked? I think in this test, the big popping eyes attract all the views.

Michiel, yes, It's true... good thumbnail artists are in demand. Many content creators regard thumbnails as an afterthought, but those who know, realize that those little thumbnails do a lot of heavy lifting.
The competition for eyeballs online is a fierce battle!
You're collage is brilliant!!!

Of course, the thumbnail needs to attract attention. Some people pervert this by putting thumbnails that have nothing to do with the content of their video but which thus arouse the curiosity of the user who ends up clicking. That's the goal and it works.

Great tip create awesome thumbnails but it has to be connected to the video!

In the future I will use a "How to get free beer" thumbnail with every upload. 😂

I know what you guys mean. I avoid "click-bate" like the plague. It will actually destroy the channel's reputation in the long run. It's fine to exaggerate a concept in the thumbnail as long as the design relates to the content.
Thanks guys! :)
