Nice video about the history of aspect ratio by John Hess/FilmmakerIQ.com.

Notice that BluffTitler can render in any aspect ratio you like. You can set it in the FILE > SET SHOW RESOLUTION dialog.

Thanks, enjoyed that!

A rectangle with the aspect ratio of 1.577 was called the "golden" rectangle by the Greeks who thought it was the most pleasing to the eye. It can be obtained by the Fibonacci series which shows up in interesting ways in nature. This is hardly connected to the present video, but I thought of it while watching. :

PS: 1.577 is almost the average of 4:3 & 16:9.

Yes, I also wonder why the golden ration isn't used for screens.

Note that BluffTitler has a golden ratio preset in the FILE > SET SHOW RESOLUTION dialog.

It can be defined as the ratio in which the sum to the biggest equals the biggest to the smallest:

(A+B)/A = A/B = 1.61803

Next to this algebraic formula there's a much simpler, algorithmic way to compute this number.

Start with a square (1:1) and in each step replace the first number by the sum and replace the second by the first. Every step is a step closer to the golden ratio:

1:1 1
2:1 2
3:2 1.5
5:3 1.66667
8:5 1.6
13:8 1.625
21:13 1.61538
34:21 1.61905
55:34 1.61765
89:55 1.61818
144:89 1.61798
233:144 1.61806
377:233 1.61803

This simple algorithm probably explains why you can find it so often in nature!
