When I export as movie, the file plays very slow and choppy.

That's why they have invented video compression!

You can export your show as a compressed video file by choosing COMPRESSED AVI in the FILE > EXPORT AS MOVIE... dialog.

However, for maximum quality, I advise you to do all your editing with uncompressed files and postpone compression to the very end: when you render the final video in your NLE (like Sony Vegas or Pinnacle Studio)

The fact that the video plays slow in your NLE does not mean that the final product (the MPG file, online video, Blu-ray or DVD) plays slow as well.
