Oh, and the trick is to use the FIXED SPACE composition mode (first dropdown below the text box), the NotLightened_Additive.fx effect file (CHANGE EFFECT button on the tool window) and to animate the COLOUR property.
The effect works best when using 2 texts with the same number of characters.

Yes it's a simple cross fade. It works very well because the texts have the same amount of characters, placed at the exact same position.
