Maybe the MEDIA > CHANGE MODEL... dialog is a better place. It already has a SUBMODELS box where you can give submodels special treatment.
Realize that you can also make a submodel invisible by setting its corresponding SX prop to 0. For example you can make Toby's head invisible by setting the SX MIXAMORIG:HEAD prop to 0.
