This is a variation on Michiel's earlier posted effect. I experimented with some of the settings and found the following: if you change the background color (File\Set Background Colour), the matte color will change.
In addition, when you change the text color, the matted text will get a colored overlay, allowing you to create some dramatic effects, especially when attaching a border (Layer\Attach Border to Current Layer).
Since the masking effect does not do any lighting, changing the LIGHT COLOUR property of the ambient light layer has the same effect as changing the background colour.
By default the background colour is the same as the ambient light colour, but you can change this by unmarking the checkbox in the FILE / SET BACKGROUND COLOUR dialog.
