Found out myself. It's counting the numbers of particles in a show. But it goes to a maximum of 100.
Can you do more with it.

When entering the text "<particles />" in the text layer, it prints the total number of particles of all particle layers combined. So this number can be a lot higher than 100.
Take a look at this installer show: Particle\Grass.bt
Its practical use is limited to optimizing shows (the most impressive show with the least amount of particles) and debugging.
