Nice effect!

Here's my answer to the puzzle:
1) choose LAYER > ADD LAYER > ADD EPS LAYER... and do NOT select an EPS, but instead a picture like a JPG or PNG file
2) switch to the PIXELS style with the 3rd dropdown below the disabled textbox
3) animate the EXPLOSION property

Or maybe you did this:
1) choose LAYER > ADD LAYER > ADD TEXT LAYER
2) change the text to something like this:
..........
..........
..........
..........
..........
3) choose MEDIA > CHANGE TEXTURE, select a picture in the 1st texture slot and select the Special\UVMapper effect
4) set the SPACING prop to something like (0,-6,1) to remove the spaces between the dots
5) use the FX TEXTURE POSITION and FX TEXTURE SIZE props to position the picture
6) animate the JUMBLE property

Oh, and you must have used a colourmap layer instead of a picture file to make the scroller work!

No. For full control I'm afraid you will have to create a layer for every cube.

The EPS layer solution is probably the fastest solution. You can set the number of cubes with the PIXEL SIZE prop.
