I have a show with a picture on the bottom. Over the picture, I want to put a symbol picture. I created the symbol with a transparent background in Photoshop.
However, when I create a BT layer for the symbol, it does not come in sharp. That is, it picks up the BT background on the edges so that instead of it being a crisp picture, it has specks of black background around the symbol edges.
I have made the symbol JPG and PNG thinking the symbol would be clear.
How can I create a clear crisp symbol to overlay the picture
The best way is : use eps instead image
for this; use a small utility to convert your image to eps from here:

Since I don't have your file to examine, I don't know exactly what is happening but here are a few possibilities:
1) A setting in one of the Layers Listboxes might be causing a problem. You'll find the 3 drop down menus at the far left of the Tool Window ( just under the box for typing in text).
2) When the PNG was saved from Photoshop, a layer was turned on in addition to the symbol layer.
3) If the symbol has to be enlarged by BT, it may not be sharp.
As SamSaam said, an eps could solve the problem. Another helpful source are Dingbat and Symbol fonts. They may have a shape or symbol that will do the job. Characters from a font are usually have crisp edges and can also be textured and given 3D characteristics.
