Apologies if this is a really basic question but I have to ask.

When I export a show as a movie I always compress (mainly as the movie wont be as large) but the quality is never as good as when I dont compress - despite playing around with a host of different compressing options.

Do I just have to accept that to get the best quality shows exported as movies, I have to have uncompressed files?

The answer is yes. Compression makes your video file smaller at the cost of image quality.
